Schmincke Hordam Gouache – The best gouaches for artists

Schmincke Horadam Gouache are 48 of the best colours traditionally based on gum arabic and made exclusively from the best artist’s pigments. All colours have a natural opacity, which is not additionally enhanced by the addition of white. They allow a wide range of combinations with Horadam watercolours. Both ranges can be mixed with each other. Due to their different surface effects, they serve different, complementary ways of artistic expression: the Horadam Aquarell series is more transparent, allowing the paper to stand out and create layers, while the Horadam Gouache gouaches are opaque, pastel and create intensive layers of pigment.

• The highest concentration of pigments guarantees luminosity and depth of all colours. Hoardam Gouache can be used directly from the tube or diluted with water and mixed and combined with all other Schmincke gouache series. The colours have a matt finish and are therefore slightly lighter after drying. Once the work is dry, Horadam Gouache can be reactivated by adding a little water and worked on all types of absorbent paper, cardboard and canvas again.   There are many different ways to apply Hoaradam Gouache – they are very versatile. Although they can be heavily diluted, gouache is mainly intended for creating opaque layers. Which means using them in their pure form straight from the tube. Strong opacity in this case does not mean a thick and convex layer, on the contrary, the color is flat without strongly visible brush marks.

  Painting with watercolors involves a gradual transition from light to dark (white paper is light), while in gouache painting it can be done in any order.

  In watercolour painting it is difficult to add lighter elements at a later stage (unless using a masking fluid) whereas in gouache painting you can add light at any time by adding lighter colours. Students very quickly realise that gouache is slightly lighter when dry and use the appropriate proportions when mixing the paints.
